“Marco, grab the shots and bring them over here,” Lena called from the seating area in the bar.
“Lena, you’re the only woman I know who can match me with the juicing, marry me will ya?” Marco joked back.
Lena clicked her tongue and rolled her eyes, “honey, don’t sniff what you can’t afford!”
“Yeah, yeah, we’ll see about that. You won’t be able to resist my charms,” winking at Lena, Marco set the drinks down in front of them.
Annalise quietly made her way into the bar, setting Mrs Statelys empty mug on the table and sitting down. She didn’t say anything. Lena knocked her out of her thoughts.
“Whats up with you, girly? Here have a drink” Lena slid her glass over to Annalise “barkeep, fetch me a new one will ya?”
Annalise turned and smiled at Lena, “nothing, nothing at all…”
“You sure, sweetie? You look like you seen a ghost”
“Honestly, Lena, it’s nothing. I promise. Just shaken up from whats happened with Mr Stately.”
“Yeah, let’s talk about that,” Marco had returned with a new drink for Lena, “is it just me that’s completely creeped by being in the same house as a dead body?”
“I’m more creeped out by your Jekyll and Hyde personality,” Lena rolled her head back laughing and slapped Marcos leg.
“Oh Lena, ménage à trois? You don’t need to ask me twice.”
“In your dreams, sunshine”
“Always Lena, always”
Annalise got up from her seat, “I think I’ll leave you guys to it. I’m heading upstairs to check on Mrs Stately.”
Annalise tiptoed her way up the stairs, still thinking of what she would do with the information she had over heard. Was it true? Were Kris and Mrs. Stately having an affair? Her interest was peaked too much to just let it go. When she reached the floor she felt her stomach drop, she could hear Lena roaring with laughter from the bar with Marco and began to make her way towards Mrs. Statelys room.
“Annalise?” It was Kris, “we really need to stop meeting like this, it’s how rumours start”
“Rumours, yes…” Annalise tailed off.
“Are you ok? Do you want to come in?”
“No, no thanks. I’m heading to bed, it’s been a long day”
Annalise turned on her heel and disappeared into her room. Back downstairs Marco was topping up Lena’s glass.
“So, pretty lady, how about you and I hit the sack?”
Lena laughs, “Oh Marco, how many times do I have to tell you? It’s never going to happen”
“We’ll see, we’ll see.”
Annalise lit the fire in her room, this house was large and drafty. She settled down on the couch when she heard a small tapping at the door. At first she thought she was maybe hearing things but then she heard it again. Annalise got up and made her way over to her door, she could see the shadow of feet behind her door.
“Psst, Annalise, open up, it’s Kris”
Annalise rested her hand on the handle and contemplated for a second on what she would do. Before she could stop herself, she had opened the door and was stood staring at Kris.
“Well, are you going to let me in?”
“What?” Annalise snapped out of her thought, “sorry, of course, I was just warming up my the fire.”
Both Annalise and Kris settled into the sofa, there was now an uneasy air between the two that hadn’t been there before, and Kris noticed it.
“Annalise, are you ok? You seem a bit, I don’y know, off?”
“Oh do I? Must just be something to do with being in a home where someone died recently I guess.”
“No, I don’t think so, surely in your line of work you’ve been there before so it must be something else”
Annalise shifted uncomfortably in her chair.
“So, I guess you maybe heard something that wasn’t for your ears then?” Kris narrowed his eyes.
“I don’t know what you’re trying to get at here, Kris”
“Well, if you’re not going to tell me I may as well go,” Kris started to get up.
“Wait, I just have one question for you.”
Kris sat back down again and looked at Annalise.
“What was the purpose of this proposal, if you and Mrs Stately were just going to go off together with the money anyway?”
“Me and Mrs Stately?” Kris chuckled, “no, god no. You’ve heard a snippet of conversation and let your imagination run wild.”
“Oh, really? Then what did I mishear?”
“Shhh…” Kris put his finger to her lips, “that’s not important. All you need to know is that Mrs Stately and I are, categorically, 100% not together. Please I need you to believe that.”
Kris took her hands and kissed them softly. She blushed. There was a silence between the pair before Kris leaned in to kiss Annalise. This had taken her by surprise but she did nothing to stop it from escalating. Maybe she had misheard them after all, maybe it was her mistake. She still needed answers but she would let that slide until the morning.
