The sun had began to set, the only noise to be heard was the clicking and scraping of cutlery as the table ate in silence. Nobody was quite sure what to say to each other. Just an hour previously the house had been full of people. People asking questions, looking for answers and trying to understand what had happened. It would still be some time before the whole truth was known.
“Can you pass the water, please?” Lena looked up at patrons of the table, Annalise was the first to make eye contact. She silently lifted the jug of water and passed it to her companion.
“So, are we going to talk about what we do next?” Marco questioned, “I mean, what now? We can’t just stay here.”
“You can,” the tree bodies turned to look at the fourth, it was Kris.
“Oh and that’s for you to decide, isn’t it? I’m still surprised you’ve not been hauled away by the police yet” Marco snipped.
“And why would that be?” Kris shot back.
“Oh please, its all very convenient for you isn’t it? We all saw you canoodling with Mrs. Stately after her husband died, Annalise overheard you both talking about how you killed him…”
“Actually, that’s not what I…” Annalise started.
“Shut up,” Marco snapped, “so you both offed him, then you offed her? It’s the perfect plan, you think you can ride off into the sunset with your big payoff. Bet you got the old broad to sign over her will to you first, right? Just to make sure you got the money? Well I’ve got news for you sunshine, I’m not going anywhere, I’ve been through too much is this damn house to just walk away now.”
Kris sighed, “You really have no idea what you’re talking about you buffoon”
“Well explain it then, why don’t you?” Marco’s voice had shot up an octave and was dripping in sarcasm.
“I don’t have to explain myself to you, you wouldn’t understand anyway…”
“Excuse me,” Annalise rose from the table and rushed out the room.
“Well done you two, as if all this isn’t enough you pair have to fight and upset Annalise further?” Lena stormed out the room after Annalise.
Annalise had locked herself in the bathroom, Lena chapped the door but received no answer. She pushed her ear up against the door and heard Annalise heaving inside.
“Sweetie, I never took you for the queasy type, considering your profession and all. I’ll be back in a minute, I’ll go fetch some water”
When Lena returned to get a glass of water of Annalise the boys were still arguing.
“Seriously, Marco, you have zero right to know what goes on in my life or what actions I choose to take,” Kris yelled.
“Listen kid, I’ve been around the block a few times and I don’t need to take this from you so how about you just admit to what you’ve done, turn yourself in and let us sort this out with the lawyers.”
“That’s not how this is going to do down, Marco. Trust me”
“Trust you? You’ve done nothing to deserve our trust, you sneak around, you lie, I mean, you’re just a con man really aren’t you?? Are you parents even dead or did you lie about that too, eh?”
“That’s enough,” Kris yelled and launched into Marco.
“Stop! Both of you,” Lena pleaded, “this is ridiculous”
After swinging a few punches, Marco and Kris separated. Marco stormed out of the room and headed up the stairs. Annalise, having been in the bathroom for the entire fight poked her head around the door to see Lena tending to Kris, Marco had burst his lip and he had blood over his shirt.
“Are you ok, Kris?” Annalise asked
“What do you care?” Kris spat as he walked out the room.
Lena walked over to Annalise and placed a hand on her arm.
“Come on, sweetie, let’s get some sleep.” Lena soothed as she led Annalise out of the room.
As the girls made their way into the hall and up the stairs they heard a crashing noise. and then a grunt. They both quickened their pace and found Marco and Kris once again fighting with each other.
“ENOUGH” Annalise yelled.
Both men stopped and looked at her, still standing with their fists held up. Marco was the first to drop his and looked at Kris.
“Just give it up, Kris, just tell the truth.” Marco pleaded, still out of breath from their fight.
“The truth?” Kris smirked at him, then turned to Lena and Annalise, “what about you two, do you really want to know the truth about me?”
“Is there a truth to know, Kris? One that we don’t already know?” Lena asked.
Kris exhaled heavily through his nose, “well I guess you were going to find out sooner or later. It’s about Mrs. Stately, she’s my…”
“I knew it” yelled Marco, “I said it all along didn’t I?”
“Shut up Marco,” Lena snapped, “Kris…?”
Kris looked at the group, shifting his eyes from one to the other “parents,” he mumbled.
“What?” Lena probed.
“My parents, Mr and Mrs Stately, both of them. They were my birth parents.”
